My aunt came to visit from Mexico and while we all sat around the table eating capirotada, the topic of what we want our funerals to be like came up. We all talked about the type of celebration we wanted for our funerals and then I realized; it’s a very Latin American (especially Mexican) tradition to think of funerals as celebrations. I can still hear my mother’s laughter as she told us how as soon as she felt like dying, she would leave to Mexico. And if she didn’t make it we could take her and tell everybody she was sleeping, like in the song “Mexico lindo y querido”. It is a beautiful way to view life and death and it’s moments like these that make me appreciate my roots, culture, and traditions even more. ¡Viva Mexico!
